연수일기 32. 학부모 상담

3월 15일 월요일. 51일째 날. 오후에 학부모 상담이 있었다. 중간에 있었던 방학 1주일을 제외하고, 지난 주까지 아이들이 딱 4주를 학교에서 지냈다. 아이들과 있는 시간이 늘어서 한국에서보다 더 학교 생활에 대한 이야기나 아이들의 생각을 듣는 기회도 많아졌지만, 담임 선생님들은 아이들의 학교 생활을 어떻게 바라보고 계신지 궁금했다. 

지난 주에 선생님들께서 미리 report card를 보내주셨다. 평가 항목은 Learning and Behavioral outcomes, Standards for Mathematical Practice, Academic Scoring Key의 세 그룹이었고, 마지막 항목의 경우 Mathematics, Reading, Writing, Language, Social studies, Science, Fine arts and Physical education의 세부 항목으로 나뉘었다. 각각의 항목을 Exceed / Secure / Developing / Beginning의 네 단계로 평가했다. 첫째 아이의 경우 대부분의 항목이 S였고, 둘째는 첫 번째 그룹 외에는 대부분 D나 B였다. 전체적인 형식은 한국 학교와 크게 다르지 않은 것 같다. 맨 끝에 선생님의 자유 코멘트가 있었다. 

- Gabe is a hard-working, respectful student. He prefers to work independently or with classmates, rather than getting help from the teacher, and has shown a strong ability to work and learn in English. He is allowed to use Google Translate when needed, and clearly uses it effectively to support his understanding. He consistently performs at or above grade level in math, solving challenging word problems. For reading during Black History Month, he selected a scientist to study and read an article and created an informational poster. Most recently he performed amazingly well on a thermal energy science test, demonstrating a strong understanding of not only the concepts, but the high-level academic language in English. Socially, Gabe is quiet and well-liked. I've observed him helping a classmate learn to fold a paper crane and playing four-square outside. Gabe is a joy to teach.

- Lynn has been a wonderful addition to the classroom. She is rapidly making progress and attempting things in English more frequently. She has made friends and is a joy to work with. She would benefit from continued exposure to English through reading and writing.

아들의 담임선생님께서는 i-Ready라고 하는 프로그램의 평가 점수를 미리 보내주셨다. i-Ready는 읽기와 수학 능력을 게임 형식의 학습으로 평가할 수 있는 프로그램으로 보이는데 아이들 학교가 속한 Del Mar 학군은 이 프로그램을 학습 레벨 평가 방법으로 채택하고 있었다. 한국 아이들은 대부분 수학 과목은 큰 어려움을 느끼지 않는다던데, 초등학교 레벨 교과 과정에 차이가 있는 것도 이유겠지만 대부분의 아이들이 선행을 해서이기도 할 것이다. 학원에 가보지 않은 우리 집 아이들도 1년 정도 앞서 문제집을 풀고 있으니... 아이들이 가져오는 수업 자료를 보면 수학의 경우 문제 수준이 높지 않지만 답을 구하는 과정에서 풀이를 중요하게 여기는 걸 알 수 있다. 

Math Performance

상담은 zoom을 통해 진행했다. 각각 15분 정도의 시간이었는데, 영어 상담이라 좀 긴장을 했지만 다행히 선생님의 말씀을 이해하는 데에 큰 어려움은 없었다. 아이들의 담임 선생님을 포함해 직접 이야기해 본 선생님들은 소수이지만 대부분이 열정적이었다. 선생님들의 봉급이 그다지 높지 않다고 들었는데, 그럼에도 불구하고 교육자로서의 책임감과 아이들을 가르치는 일에 대한 애정과 열정은 높다고도 했다. 굳이 한국과 비교할 필요는 없겠지만 만약 차이가 있다면 결국 환경과 시스템의 문제가 아닐까 싶다. 미국의 교육에 대해선 또 언젠가 생각을 정리할 기회가 있을 것이다.
